How to Wash and Care for a Velvet Janamaz

A velvet janamaz stays soft and bright for years if you look after it. Here are simple steps that are safe for printed velvet mats like ours.

Everyday care

• Shake the mat out every few days to remove dust.
• Fold it along the same lines, or roll it, when you put it away.
• Keep it out of strong direct sunlight, which can fade the colours.

Removing a small stain

1. Dab the stain with a clean, damp cloth. Do not rub hard.
2. Use a little mild soap or shampoo on the cloth if needed.
3. Wipe again with clean water and let it dry in the shade.

Washing the whole mat

1. Hand wash in a tub of cold or lukewarm water with a little mild detergent.
2. Gently press the mat with your hands. Do not scrub or twist it.
3. Rinse in clean water until the soap is gone.
4. Press out the water by rolling the mat in a towel. Do not wring it.
5. Dry flat or on a line in the shade. Avoid strong sun and do not tumble dry.

If you use a washing machine, use the gentle cycle with cold water, put the mat in a laundry bag, and skip the spin, or use a low spin.

What not to do

• Do not use bleach.
• Do not iron the printed side.
• Do not dry it in strong sunlight for many hours.
